GREENHOUSE PAGE 4
"Ow, that hurts. Yesterday, I couldn't feel that,"
"Can you move your left-arm? " That was your stroke side."
Her arm moved on the bed cover. "God, I could move it, when I couldn't
budge it yesterday."
"I destroyed the area of the blood-cut, and stopped the drainage into
your brain."
"You have magic hands, Dr. Gordon. I will donate money for a hospital
wing."
As Jeff left the room, he thought that the hospital board of directors would
be happy about Mrs. Hobbs donation, however, he would do the same for his poor patients.
He had a rule that if the patient needed the operation he would perform it, and charge
only what they could afford. He was in demand since his fees were proportional to his
patient's resources, so that he scheduled operations months in advance.
Hollywood Hills looked clear today, he thought, when he started his car that
started the automatic filter system as the engine pulsed with its eight cylinders.
Air-conditioning was inadequate given the airpolution in Los Angeles, and chemical
companies processed chemical wastes, dumping more
poisons into the atmosphere. Similar to California contaminating of Florida occurred in
the late 1990s by the waste processing plants that pumped more lead, mercury, and arsenic
into the atmosphere. His colleagues, the Florida Environmental agency reported that
instead of cleaning up the state the airpolution levels were now toxic.
Did this strange agency Pat Dempsey was a member of, have something to do
with the environmental disaster that plagued the Planet? She said it was a cover. Was this
division a police organization, or a force to rid the world of pollution? Destruction of
chemical plants, or an underground revolution seemed too extreme, Jeff blocked out these
thoughts that disturbed his rational methods of dealing with reality. He recalled Dr.
Fredrickson warning: "reality test, before you jump to conclusions."
Moon lighting on the environmental project, was his primary concern at the
time he pulled into the employees' lot. His skills as a surgeon was a benefit to the
Genetic Engineering Project at Gal. Biological Engineering. The Human Genome was mapped by
the Big Biology project that began in the 1990s. Biochemically genetic engineers modify
gene structure, but the interaction between genes required mapping and surgically
modifying chromosomes under the electron microscope. Jeff's abilities in microsurgery
thereby completed the gap in technique necessary to build chromosomes.
Optimistic views said we could modify the Human Genome so that airpolution,
UV radiation, and poisonous contaminants could not switch on the oncogenes that caused
cancer. Pessimistic views expressed a negative outcome of genetic engineering that turned
people into superhumans that would
not die. This would increase the world population to a level to which, no life could be
sustained, since natural resources would disappear.
A brunette with short hair, and a smile that seemed to breathe sensuality
greeted Jeff. "How are you Jeff?"
He tried to concentrate on the rationale for the genetic engineering
project, however Jeannie distracted his train-of-thought. "O.K. Genie." Her
nickname was amusing considering
"I Dream of Genie" was a twentieth century show about a blond genie who appeared
that granted wishes to her boyfriend.
"Have you performed any genetic magic today?"
"Ha. That joke is trite, Jeff. However, I still laugh
at it. The new plant absorbs all toxic waste contaminants from the air, compared with the
nonengineered plants, while Next Page |
